Great Dragon...

I've been thinking of something that was discussed some time ago...particularly of the transition between our own worlds and this one. People have come and gone from this world, but most of them lack the memory of having been here before.

This disturbs me greatly, the idea of losing the memories we gain in this world. I need to return to Magvel as soon as possible to fulfill my duty, but I'd not want to forget my time here. I had believed that my experience here would make me stronger, so that I may be better prepared to face what awaits me in my own world. But if we lose these memories, will our existence here be meaningless? The friends we've made, the knowledge we've learned, any strength we've found will be for naught. On the other hand, could it be different for different people? Are there any who were able to recall their time here upon returning to their own world?

The experiences throughout one's life, both good and bad, determine how we develop as individuals. To lose all of that is just...

[He trails off, as he ponders a word to describe the feeling of losing memories. Yet all he can draw is a blank...]

[Sometime later, after he recovers from his DP removal aftereffects, Saleh heads to the Battle Dome. He sets up the simplest scenario; a wide grassy field, with a slow-moving rotted zombie as his sole opponent. Saleh stands a good distance from the enemy with his Divine tome in hand. He casts his spell; a ball of light fires up from where he stands, dropping down on the creature. The zombie is instantly killed by the attack. Satisfied that his light magic ability has been restored, Saleh ends the scenario and leaves the simulation room.]

[It'll be easy to catch him going to or from the Battle Dome.]

That's part of what I can't forgive about this place.

[These rather cold words brought to you by a girl who was lost, shamed, beaten and enslaved not once, but twice, thanks to forgetting what she learned in Luceti when she returned to her world - before ending up here again.]

...Have you been sent back to your world before?

[Voice]

[identity profile] no-use-running.livejournal.com 2011-12-11 11:45 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes, for four years in my world, although it was only a short time here. [And having come this far, she should say the rest.]

At that time, I knew something very important for my world, and for me. It would have saved a lot of suffering for a lot of people. But when I returned, I didn't remember it. When I came back here, I understood that.

I see...

[Just what he was afraid of...]

Had any time passed in your world when you returned?

[Voice]

[identity profile] no-use-running.livejournal.com 2011-12-13 12:34 am (UTC)(link)
No. [The answer is dull, final.] I went back to exactly what happened before.

[And that's why she can never forgive the Malnosso.]

[identity profile] mountain-sage.livejournal.com 2011-12-14 04:25 am (UTC)(link)
Well, it would be good for me, as I feared something would happen to someone I was supposed to protect. But unfortunately, it seems I will have to make do without the memories, as much as it pains me.

I also had to fix things without them. It took a long time to put it right.

Sometimes that's easiest, though, not to remember. Some of us have too much to do where we come from, and memories from this place would only be a burden, another weakness we cannot afford to have.

It might, in my opinion, be the kindest thing about this place.

How would it be a burden?

Remembering those lost whom you know you have no hope of ever seeing again can be difficult.

[identity profile] mountain-sage.livejournal.com 2011-12-11 06:19 pm (UTC)(link)
It can be, but it is still an important memory.

I'd rather be without those memories.

I'm sorry you feel that way.

[Even though he just can't agree.]

There's no reason to be sorry.

[Rydia is on her way from the battle dome after training there for a while when she spots Saleh approaching from the opposite direction. Perking up, she waves.]

[identity profile] mountain-sage.livejournal.com 2011-12-11 07:00 pm (UTC)(link)
[The wave catches his eye as he glances over at her.]

Oh, Rydia. Good to see you.

[personal profile] mistlegacy 2011-12-11 08:13 pm (UTC)(link)
Likewise!

[She pauses to look him over.]

You definitely seem better off than last week.

[identity profile] mountain-sage.livejournal.com 2011-12-11 11:42 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm feeling much better off as well. Again, I owe it to you.

[personal profile] mistlegacy 2011-12-12 12:28 am (UTC)(link)
Good!

[She beams.]

So, is everything back to normal? You have back what you were missing?

[identity profile] mountain-sage.livejournal.com 2011-12-12 01:13 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes, I've regained my light magic ability. I hadn't imagined that it would feel this good.

[personal profile] mistlegacy 2011-12-12 03:36 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, it's a part of you that was missing. Having it back means you're whole again.

[Her smile turns slightly wistful at that.]

[identity profile] mountain-sage.livejournal.com 2011-12-12 04:34 pm (UTC)(link)
Indeed. I do feel whole again.

[He glances at the Divine tome in his hands, with the barest hint of a smile on his lips. He then glances back at Rydia.]

So, what brings you out here today?

[personal profile] mistlegacy 2011-12-12 08:24 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm on my way home. I just finished training back here.

[She gestures to the battle dome.]

Though that was as much for a change from the winter scenery as a workout.

[identity profile] mountain-sage.livejournal.com 2011-12-14 04:26 am (UTC)(link)
You still dislike the winter? How do you normally cope with it?

[personal profile] mistlegacy 2011-12-14 04:34 am (UTC)(link)
Aside from that? Focusing on the Welcome Center. There's usually a lot do once a new cycle starts, after all. And find something else to do once it slows down again helps a bit, too.

[identity profile] mountain-sage.livejournal.com 2011-12-14 04:51 am (UTC)(link)
Hmm, that is true. You stay in the warmth of the Welcome Center most of the time.

[He'll stick with wandering around in the cold.]

[personal profile] mistlegacy 2011-12-14 03:45 pm (UTC)(link)
It's not even that, it's just that helping people distracts me from being impatient for all this to end, you know? Their problems are bigger than mine, what with having just arrived, and I know it.
menial: (* ccccccertainly not)

[voice]

[personal profile] menial 2011-12-11 09:50 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, if you look at it the other way, the same thing seems to happen in the normal world when you die.

[voice]

[identity profile] mountain-sage.livejournal.com 2011-12-12 01:17 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm...not so certain about that...

[He's not even seeing it as relevant to the issue at hand.]
menial: (* ccccccertainly not)

[voice]

[personal profile] menial 2011-12-14 02:58 am (UTC)(link)
Well, no way to be certain about this, either. Until it happens.

[voice]

[identity profile] mountain-sage.livejournal.com 2011-12-14 04:27 am (UTC)(link)
At least people have returned to tell the tale. For death, it is not so easy, as far as a permanent death is concerned.
menial: ($ is that so)

[voice]

[personal profile] menial 2011-12-15 12:53 am (UTC)(link)
Well, it seems pretty intuitive. Though as far as returning to tell the tale, perhaps they just don't remember remembering.
godbent: (Seriously I cried a little)

[voice]

[personal profile] godbent 2011-12-14 02:30 am (UTC)(link)
And that's why the system needs a resolution.

[voice]

[identity profile] mountain-sage.livejournal.com 2011-12-14 04:28 am (UTC)(link)
...What sort of resolution would you recommend?
godbent: (But I don't really care)

[voice]

[personal profile] godbent 2011-12-14 04:37 am (UTC)(link)
Isn't that obvious? You need to resolve this world's "problem."

[voice]

[identity profile] mountain-sage.livejournal.com 2011-12-14 04:52 am (UTC)(link)
That doesn't exactly answer the question. The question was, how?
godbent: (Alchemy)

[voice]

[personal profile] godbent 2011-12-14 04:56 am (UTC)(link)
Basically, you need to stop the process by which people come here and come back.

[voice]

[identity profile] mountain-sage.livejournal.com 2011-12-14 05:04 am (UTC)(link)
[Well, he's certainly pulling teeth with this one.]

Of course...
godbent: (I have always had a vagina)

[voice]

[personal profile] godbent 2011-12-14 05:09 am (UTC)(link)
[Sigh]

Look, going home is a function of this world right now, and then a lot of people just come back, either as themselves or some other version of themselves. Either way, they forget when they go home. A lot forget coming back here. The only solution is to resolve the problem - to cut off the "force" bringing people here.

[voice]

[identity profile] mountain-sage.livejournal.com 2011-12-14 05:16 am (UTC)(link)
And there is no known way to do so...
godbent: (Oh. Oh I see...)

[voice]

[personal profile] godbent 2011-12-14 05:51 am (UTC)(link)
Yet.
